The 1st stage of the Tour de France 2018 took place on July 7, 2018. The flat stage led over 201 kilometers from Noirmoutier-en-l'Île to Fontenay-le-Comte .

The winner of the day in the sprint of the front field was Tour de France debutant Fernando Gaviria ( Quick-Step Floors ), who relegated Peter Sagan ( Bora-hansgrohe ) and Marcel Kittel ( Team Katusha Alpecin ) to their places on the uphill straight .

Gaviria took over the yellow jersey and took the lead in the points and junior ranking . Nevertheless, the next day Marcel Kittel drove in green, as Gaviria (yellow jersey) and Sagan ( rainbow jersey of the world champion) can only wear one jersey . As a result of several falls and defects, several favorites, including last year's winner Chris Froome , Richie Porte and Adam Yates, lost 51 seconds and Nairo Quintana 1:15 minutes.

Previously, a three-man leading group that formed immediately after the start had been overtaken. From this top group, Jérôme Cousin won the intermediate sprint for the points classification, Kévin Ledanois the only mountain classification - whereby he won the dotted jersey - and again Cousin won the bonus sprint 13.5 kilometers from the finish. The third runaway Yoann Offredo was awarded the red shirt number .

Lawson Craddock fell in the refreshment zone and drove the remaining 97 kilometers and the entire tour to the finish despite a shoulder fracture.
