The 16th stage of the Tour de France 2018 led over 218 kilometers from Carcassonne to Bagnères-de-Luchon on July 24, 2018 .

After two mountain classifications in the 4th category and the intermediate sprint after 124 kilometers, the course reached the Pyrenees . Three passes were completed: first after 155 kilometers the Col de Portet-d'Aspet , 2nd category 7% gradient over 5.4 kilometers, then the Col de Menté after 171 kilometers, 1st category with 8.1% gradient on 6th , 9 kilometers and finally after 208 kilometers the Col du Portillon , 1st category with double the number of points (7.1% on 8.3 kilometers). This was followed by a 10-kilometer descent to the stage destination.

The stage winner was Julian Alaphilippe ( Quick-Step Floors ) for the second time with a 15-second lead over Gorka Izagirre ( Bahrain-Merida ) and Adam Yates ( Mitchelton-Scott ).

29 kilometers after the start, the race was interrupted for about 20 minutes because the police used irritants to break up a protest from farmers and various drivers on the field had to be treated with watery eyes after passing this point. The attacks continued after the restart, but only after around 100 kilometers, which were covered at an average of 47 km / h, a 47-strong group of leaders was able to break away from the field. On the way to the Col de Portet-d'Aspet, Philippe Gilbert pulled away from this group, won the mountain classification, but had a hard fall on the descent and was 142nd of the day. At the Col du Portillon, Yates pulled away and crossed the pass with a 20 second lead over Alaphilippe. When Yates crashed on the descent, he was overtaken by Alaphilippe.

The group of the best in the overall ranking reached the daily goal 8:52 minutes behind. The tours in the overall points , mountain and junior ranking remained unchanged. Bahrain-Merida , which was able to place three drivers in the front field with Gorka Izagirre (2nd), Domenico Pozzovivo (5th) and Ion Izagirre (16th), took the lead in the team standings . Gilbert, who was later diagnosed with a broken kneecap, was awarded the red number on his back .

Damien Howson and Serge Pauwels , who had fallen the day before, and the disqualified Gianni Moscon did not start . Tim Declercq gave up during the stage.
