The 12th stage of the Tour de France 2018 led over 175.5 kilometers from Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Alpe d'Huez on July 19, 2018 .
Alpe d'Huez has already reached the top of the Tour de France 31 times . The Hors Catégorie mountain classification with a gradient of 13.8 kilometers and an average gradient of 8.1% was preceded by three other mountain classifications: after 53.5 kilometers the Col de la Madeleine (Hors Catégorie, 25.3 kilometers, 6%), after 83 kilometers the Lacets de Montvernier (2nd category, 17 switchbacks in 3.4 kilometers with 8.2%) and finally 55 kilometers before the finish of the Col de la Croix de Fer (Hors Catégorie, 29 kilometers, 5.2%).
The winner of the stage was Geraint Thomas from Team Sky , who wore the yellow jersey , in the uphill sprint a few seconds ahead of Tom Dumoulin ( Team Sunweb ), Romain Bardet ( Ag2r La Mondiale ) and Thomas' team-mate, last year's winner Chris Froome .
The race was initially shaped by a 29-strong breakaway group that had formed at the Col de la Madeleine. From this group, Julian Alaphilippe , who defended the spotted jersey , won the mountain classification at the Col de la Madeleine. At the Col de la Croix de Fer, the previous overall sixth Steven Kruijswijk took off and increased his lead over the group of favorites to over six minutes at times, so that he was now the virtual overall leader. After unsuccessful attacks at the beginning of the final climb by Vincenzo Nibali and Bardet, Froome attacked and caught Kruijswijk 3.4 kilometers from the finish. However, Thomas, Dumoulin, Bardet and Mikel Landa caught up shortly afterwards. Nibali fell 3.9 kilometers from the finish and was still seventh on stage, 13 seconds behind. However, due to a vertebral fracture discovered later, he had to give up the tour.
Pierre Latour , who was now part of the 29-strong breakaway group, defended his white jersey , as did Peter Sagan the lead in the points classification and Landa's Movistar team the lead in the team classification . Kruijswijk received the red number of the day.
Rigoberto Urán , who was second in the previous year , did not start because of injuries he suffered on the 9th stage . Rick Zabel , André Greipel , Marcel Sieberg and Tony Gallopin as well as the two-time stage winners Dylan Groenewegen and Fernando Gaviria gave up the race. Dmitri Grusdew and Rein Taaramäe were taken out of the race if their waiting period was exceeded .
