The 5th stage of the Tour de France 2018 took place on July 11, 2018. The hilly stage led over 204.5 kilometers from Lorient to Quimper .

The winner in the sprint of the front field, which has been reduced to 38 drivers, was Peter Sagan ( Bora-hansgrohe ) ahead of Sonny Colbrelli ( Bahrain-Merida ). The Quick-Step Floors drivers Philippe Gilbert (3rd) and Julian Alaphilippe attacked unsuccessfully on the uphill final kilometer and finished third and fifth. Greg Van Avermaet , who finished second behind Alaphilippe on the bonus sprint shortly before the finish line, reached the day's goal in seventh place at the same time as the winner and defended his yellow jersey .

The stage was shaped by the attempt to break away by a group of seven that formed shortly after the start. Sylvain Chavanel attacked 100 kilometers from the finish in the first mountain classification and also won the following two mountain classifications. Then his Direct Energy teammate Lilian Calmejane caught up with Toms Skujiņš and Nicolas Edet . Skujins secured the lead in the mountain classification with the last two mountain classifications in the third category and was awarded the red number . Together with his last companion Calamejane, he was put 12 kilometers from the finish. Calamejane accused Skujiņs of what he saw as a passive driving style; Skujiņs, on the other hand, took the view that the attack by Calamejanes team-mate Chavanel would have "destroyed" the group's chances.

Tiesj Benoot did not start due to the consequences of the fall the previous day. Michael Matthews stopped racing because of a fever. During the stage, Robert Kišerlovski gave up with a suspected broken collarbone.
