Dion Smith (born March 3, 1993 in Taupaki (Auckland) ) is a New Zealand cyclist .

Career

After Smith initially competed primarily in New Zealand races and smaller races on the UCI America Tour , he received a contract with the British professional Continental Team ONE Pro Cycling for the 2016 season . This year he achieved his first victories in international races at the New Zealand one-day races The REV Classic and Beaumont Trophy . In addition, he finished fifth in the overall ranking of the Four Days of Dunkirk and at the Sparkassen Münsterland Giro - both races in the hors category . As a result, he moved to the Belgian Professional Continental Team Wanty-Groupe Gobert and denied the Tour de France in 2017 his first Grand Tour , where he finished as the 124th. On the second stage of the Tour de France 2018 , Smith was the first New Zealander in the history of the Tour to take over the dotted jersey in an attempt to break away .
