On the final climb , Mikel Nieve sat out of the remnants of the breakaway group , while Thomas attacked in the favorite group and initially u. a. Dumoulin and Nieve also passed 350 meters from the finish line. Last year's winner Chris Froome controlled the pursuers for his Sky teammate, followed an attack by Daniel Martin , whom he then also relocated and caught up with Dumoulin shortly before the finish.
The sprint specialists Mark Cavendish , Marcel Kittel and Mark Renshaw were taken out of the race because the waiting period was exceeded .
