Mijas is a city and a municipality in the Spanish region of Andalusia . It is one of the 100 independent municipalities in the province of Málaga .
The city of Mijas has 82,742 registered inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) on an area of 149 km². This corresponds to 555 inhabitants per km². Since there is no statutory registration requirement in Spain (comparable to Anglo-Saxon countries), the actual number of inhabitants is significantly higher. This applies in particular to foreign residents, among whom the British make up the largest contingent, followed by Germans, Scandinavians, etc. The residents of Mijas have, not least for this reason, one of the highest per capita incomes in the communities on the Costa del Sol . The only official language is Spanish (Castilian).

After the Spanish Civil War he had hidden in Mijas until the Franco regime in 1969, thirty years after the end of the war, issued a general amnesty for all "war criminals" - only those of the opposing side were meant.
Besides Cortés, only ten men came out of their hiding places. The English journalist Ronald Fraser interviewed Manuel Cortés and published the book In Hiding in 1972 . The life of Manuel Cortés , published in German under the title Im Versteck . The interviews were a milestone in the methodological development of oral history .
