Andalusia

Benaoján is a municipality in the province of Málaga in Andalusia, on the northeastern edge of the Sierra de Libar.

Geology and geography

The small town is located in the middle of a sedimentary plain a good two kilometers long and a maximum of 0.5 kilometers wide at 520 meters, more than half of which it now fills. With the up to 1200 meter high karst mountains of the Sierra and the up to 800 meter high mountain ridges of the eastern Montalate, the plain forms a tub-shaped basin, a polje .

The plain and the village are connected to the valley of the Río Guadiaro via a saddle only around 100 meters higher in the southeast . The national road leading from Ronda to Algeciras and the railway line with the town's train station are located in the river valley .

As in all Poljen, the sedimentary plain is only drained through karst openings. Depending on the seasonal precipitation, too much or too little water is found on the plain. Due to the dense settlement, the accumulation of agricultural and traffic pollutants in a karst basin, the water balance is even more precarious here than is otherwise the case in the hot, dry season of Andalusia.

Neighboring communities are Ronda, Montejaque and Jimena de la Frontera .
Benaoján has a town partnership with Knittlingen in Baden-Württemberg (Germany).

Attractions

The karst cave Cueva de la Pileta is located in the district of Benaoján. Their age is estimated to be 15,000 to 25,000 years. There are drawings that are estimated to be around 3500 years old. In 1905 the forgotten cave was rediscovered by a farmer.

Rail transport

Benaoján-Montejaque train station is located below Benaoján. There are direct connections to Ronda , Málaga , Antequera and Algeciras .
