Benalauría is a municipality in the province of Málaga in Spain .
Geographical location
Benalauría is located in the valley of the Río Genal , in the Serranía de Ronda at an altitude of 667 m. The next major city is Ronda .
history
In contrast to other villages in the Serranía de Ronda , the history of Benaluaría can only be traced back to the rule of the Moors . 715 AD the Berber tribe Ben Al Auría founded the place and gave it its name. The first agricultural areas that can fall back on the abundant water sources also date from the time of the Moors.
In 1485, Benalauría was retaken by the Christians during the Reconquista . The Morisk uprising in the Alpujarras and Serranía de Ronda in 1570 and their expulsion led to the depopulation of Benalaurías, which was offset by the planned resettlement of Christians.
During the 18th century, Benalauría experienced an economic boom, which was mainly due to the local wine, grain and olive cultivation.
Festivals
Benalauría is especially famous for its festival Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians), which is held every year on the first Sunday in August.
