Tolox (Sierra de las Nieves)

Tolox is a municipality in the province of Málaga ( Spain ), located in the Sierra de las Nieves .

history

Tolox is of Phoenician origin and was subsequently conquered by the Romans. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the brief interregnum of the Visigoths began . With the conquest of Andalusia by the Moors from 711 AD, Tolox came under Moorish rule. In 883 AD Umar ibn Hafsun conquered the city and made it one of his main bases in the Serranía de Ronda . Abd ar-Rahman III. did not succeed in recapturing the city of Umar ibn Hafsun's son Suleyman until 921. Abd ar-Rahman III. then had the castle and the Alcazar destroyed.

In 1485 Tolox was recaptured by the Christians during the Reconquista . The Moorish population was forced to recognize the political, social and cultural suzerainty of the Christians.

According to legend, in 1539 there were riots between Christians and Moors. The memories of this conflict are kept alive every year during the carnival season with the festival "Dia de los polvos" (Day of the Dust).

In 1571 there was a rebellion of the Morisks in the Serranía de Ronda and in the Alpujarras , which also affected Tolox. After this Tolox seemed to be largely depopulated, so that Philip II ordered the settlement of Christians from Galicia , Seville and Cordoba .
