route

Originally, Sicily was the starting point for the Giro d'Italia 2021. After the plan to start the Giro d'Italia 2020 in Hungary had to be abandoned as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the start of 2020 was moved to Sicily, Turin was chosen as the start location in 2021. On May 28, 2021, the 19th stage should lead over the Monte Mottarone. Due to the cable car accident there , an alternative route was set.

Sections of the 15th stage are in Slovenia ; Sections of the 20th stage in Switzerland .

The tour ran over 21 stages with approx. 3,411 kilometers and two rest days. It began and ended with a flat individual time trial over a total of 38.4 kilometers. The climbers benefited from around 47,000 vertical meters. The royal stage was the 16th stage with an altitude of around 5,700 meters over the Passo Fedaia , the Passo Pordoi and the Passo di Giau to Cortina d'Ampezzo , which had to be shortened for weather reasons. Mountain arrivals were scheduled for the 14th , 17th , 19th and 20th stage, with the 14th stage ending on the often legendary Monte Zoncolan . A special feature was the 11th stage , which led over 34 kilometers of gravel roads and ended in Montalcino . Six stages were considered sprinter-friendly .

Participating teams and drivers

The 19 UCI WorldTeams were entitled and obliged to start . The Belgian team Alpecin-Fenix qualified as the UCI ProTeam with the highest points in the UCI world rankings 2020 and accepted the invitation. In addition, the organizer RCS Sport awarded three wildcards to the Italian ProTeams Bardiani CSF Faizanè , Eolo-Kometa and Vini Zabù , whereby, following an exemption from the Union Cycliste Internationale, he was able to increase the peloton from 22 cycling teams with 176 riders to 23 teams with 184 participants. After Vini Zabù declared his withdrawal after two positive doping tests , Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec received the last wildcard.

In the absence of last year's winner Tao Geoghegan Hart ( Ineos Grenadiers ), the winner of the Vuelta a España 2018 Simon Yates ( Team BikeExchange ) was named as a top favorite. Hart's teammate and winner of the 2019 Tour de France Egan Bernal and the four-time Grand Tour winner Vincenzo Nibali ( Trek-Segafredo ) are less promising . In addition, also last year’s second Jai Hindley ( Team DSM ), last year’s fourth João Almeida and his teammate Remco Evenepoel (both Deceuninck-Quick-Step ), Mikel Landa ( Bahrain Victorious , most recently fourth in the Tour de France 2020 ) and fourth in the Tour de France 2019 Emanuel Buchmann ( Bora-hansgrohe ) as promising for top placements.

Special prices

There are also the following special prices:

  • Intermediate sprint evaluation (Traguardi Volanti) : On each stage (except time trial) the first five riders earned 10, 6, 3, 2 and one point in the two intermediate sprints (points sprint and bonus sprint). The winner of a sprint received 500 euros, the overall winner 8,000 euros.
  • Outlier classification (Premio Fuga) : The winner is the driver who has been active in outlier groups for the longest time in the entire race (in a group of a maximum of ten drivers). The winner of the day received 150 euros, the overall winner 4,000 euros.
  • Most combative driver (Combattività) : Points were awarded for this classification at the finish line, the intermediate sprints and every mountain classification. The number of points did not correspond to the points awarded for other evaluations. The winner of the day received 300 euros, the overall winner 4,000 euros.
  • Fair play rating: The basis for this team rating was a points system in which the aim was to collect as few points as possible. For example, a fine was converted into one penalty point for every 10 Swiss francs, time penalties resulted in two points per second, a downgrading 100 points and a positive doping test 2,000 points. The winning team received 5,000 euros.
