The cable car Stresa-Mottarone ( Italian Funivia Stresa-Mottarone or Funivia Stresa-Alpino-Mottarone ) is a cable car in two independent sections above the town of Stresa on Lake Maggiore in the region of Piedmont in Italy .

The cable car runs from the town of Stresa ( 200  m slm ) on Lake Maggiore to a height of 1385 m just below the summit of Monte Mottarone ( 1491  m slm ). The operator is Ferrovie del Mottarone srl . From its mountain station, the summit can be reached in 20 minutes on foot or with a chair lift.

history

Stresa – Mottarone railway line

From 1911 to May 13, 1963, a narrow-gauge rack railway ran from Stresa to Monte Mottarone (Ferrovia Stresa-Mottarone - FSM) .

Cable car

After the web in 1963 shut down had been wrong in this connection to 1970 buses . However, their capacity was limited and operation was difficult in winter. That is why construction work on the cable car began in 1967. It started operating on August 1, 1970. In 2002, it was overhauled by Poma Italia . From 2014 to 2016, the drive and controls were refurbished by Leitner AG . On August 13 or 14, 2016, the cable car was put back into operation.

Cable car accident in 2021

After the shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic , operations resumed on April 24, 2021, according to other information on May 22, 2021.

On Pentecost Sunday, May 23, 2021, at around 11:45 a.m., one of the two gondolas in the upper section crashed shortly before the entrance to the mountain station. Of the 15 passengers (transport had been reduced from 40 to 15 because of the COVID-19 pandemic ) 13 died immediately; two children were seriously injured, one later died in hospital.

A break in the pulling rope is said to have triggered the accident shortly before the uphill gondola reached the mountain station. According to the Italian public prosecutor's office, the suspension cable brake of this gondola failed, whereupon the cabin held by the suspension cable rolled downwards without braking at up to 100 kilometers per hour to the support below . There it collided with the cable car support, derailed, detached itself from the suspension cable and fell to the ground from a height of around 15 to 20 meters. From there she slid several dozen meters down the slope before trees stopped her. The second cabin, which was traveling downhill, came to a halt shortly before the middle station (Alpino) due to the correctly working cable brake, and the passengers were abseiled.

In November 2020, the suspension and traction cables were subjected to a magnetic induction test , the suspension cable brakes were last subjected to a functional test on December 1, 2020 by the South Tyrolean cable car construction company Leitner .

On the morning of May 26, 2021, three employees of the operating company were arrested. According to the investigating public prosecutor's office, the suspension cable brake had been deliberately disabled in order to provisionally solve a problem with the brake that had existed for several months and which would have required a longer shutdown of the railway, and to maintain the operation of the system. According to the public prosecutor's office, the risk was deliberately taken that the gondola derailed if the pulling rope broke. An unsuccessful attempt at repair is said to have been carried out on May 3, but operations continued thereafter. The three arrested persons - the owner of the operating company, the technical director and the operations manager - confessed that the brake had been tampered with. The technical director has been with Leitner for many years.

Of the 14 fatalities, eight were Italian, five Israeli and one Iranian citizen.

On May 28, 2021, the 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia should lead over Monte Mottarone. An alternative route was set due to the cable car accident.

Technical specifications

The cable car leads from the valley station at 205  m slm via the middle station (Alpino) at 803  m slm (length of the first section: 2351 meters) and from there to the mountain station under the summit of Mottarone at 1385  m slm (length of the second section: 3020 meters) . The highest ground clearance is over 120 meters, the total length 5371 meters.

Since 2009, a 2-seater chairlift from the manufacturer Leitner has been leading from the mountain station to the top of the mountain and to the starting point of the summer toboggan run (built in 2010).

The construction work for the cable car began in 1967 and was carried out by the Poscio company (architect Mario Cracchi from Baveno ). The technical parts of the cable car were supplied by the company Piemonte Funivie from Turin and the electrical equipment by the company Marelli. The original steel ropes were supplied by Westfälische Drahtindustrie GmbH from Hamm .
