tourism
As the highest point in the region, the mountain, the summit area of which protrudes above the tree line, offers a wide all-round view of the seven surrounding northern Italian and Swiss alpine lakes and mountain ranges, including Monte Rosa .
Due to its location, there are several antenna systems on the summit.
The mountain is very heavily used for tourism, including skiing, hiking, mountain biking and paragliding. Near the middle station of the cable car you can visit a botanical garden with numerous alpine plants and a good view over Lake Maggiore ( Giardino Botanico Alpinia ). A summer toboggan run has been set up at the summit under the name “Alpyland”. There is a museum for umbrellas and umbrellas on the toll road.
From 1911 to 1963 a narrow-gauge rack railway ran from Stresa to the summit. Steep mountain roads lead from both lakes to the facilities on Monte Mottarone.
The mountain has been accessible since 1970 by the two-part cable car "Funivia Stresa-Alpino-Mottarone", which was built by the construction company Impresa Poscio and the railway construction company Piemonte Funivie in Turin. The steel ropes were supplied by Westfälische Drahtindustrie GmbH. From October 2014 to August 12, 2016, operations were shut down due to maintenance work. The intermediate station of the two sections is at a height of 803 m . From the mountain station of the aerial tramway at 1385 m you can reach the summit in around 20 minutes on foot or with the help of a chair lift.
On May 23, 2021, a cabin in the upper cable car section crashed near the top pillar. Fourteen of the fifteen passengers were killed.
