Northern Italian lakes
The Northern Italian Lakes , also known as the Insubric Lakes , are located on the southern edge of the Alps and were created by mining ice age glaciers . They are thus glacial edge lakes ; The tongue basin lakes are a special type of lake .

- Lake Lugano (48.7 km²; Italian Lago di Lugano or Ceresio ; mostly on Swiss territory (Canton Ticino))
- Lake Orta (18.2 km²; Italian Lago d'Orta or Cusio )
- Lake Varese (14.9 km²)
- Lake Idro (11.4 km²; Italian also Erídio )
