William Cardinal Godfrey (born September 25, 1889 in Liverpool , United Kingdom , † January 22, 1963 in London ) was Archbishop of Westminster .

Life

William Godfrey was a seminarian at the Pontifical English College in Rome and was ordained a priest on October 28, 1916 . On November 21, 1938, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Cius and apostolic delegate in the UK. He was ordained bishop by Raffaele Carlo Cardinal Rossi on December 21 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Luigi Traglia , Vice President in the Diocese of Rome , and Ralph Leo Hayes , Rector of the Pontifical North America College . In 1943 he became a charge d'affaires of the Polish government-in-exile in England. He was Archbishop of Liverpool from 1953 to 1956 and Archbishop of Westminster from 1956 to 1963. Pope John XXIII accepted him in 1958 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Nereo ed Achilleo in the college of cardinals . Godfrey attended the first session of the Second Vatican Council .
