Bernard William Cardinal Griffin (born February 21, 1899 in Birmingham , England , † August 20, 1956 in New Polzeath , Cornwall ) was Archbishop of Westminster .

Life

Bernard William Griffin studied in Birmingham and Rome the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . He received on 1 November 1924, the sacrament of holy orders and personal secretary was to further study in 1927 by the Archbishop of Birmingham . From 1929 to 1938 he also worked as a diocesan chancellor, scientist and radio advisor. From 1937 to 1943 he was entrusted with the administration of the diocesan welfare housing.

In 1938 Pope Pius XI appointed him . the titular bishop of Appia and auxiliary bishop in Birmingham . He received episcopal ordination on June 30, 1938 by Thomas Leighton Williams , Archbishop of Birmingham; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Plymouth , John Patrick Barrett and William Lee , Bishop of Clifton . In 1943 Pope Pius XII assigned him . the administration of the Archdiocese of Westminster . Bernard William Griffin was on 18 February 1946 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Gregorio Magno al Celio in the College of Cardinals received.

Bernard William Cardinal Griffin was the First Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of England and Wales of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

He died on August 20, 1956 in New Polzeath and was buried in Westminster Cathedral.
