Arthur Cardinal Hinsley (born August 25, 1865 in Selby , North Yorkshire , United Kingdom , † March 17, 1943 in Butingford ) was Archbishop of Westminster .

Life

Arthur Hinsley studied Catholic theology in Durham and Rome . He received on 23 December 1893 sacrament of Holy Orders , and then worked as a lecturer in the formation of priests. From 1917 to 1930 he was the rector of the Venerable English College in Rome.

Pope Pius XI appointed him in 1926 titular bishop of Sebastopolis in Armenia . The episcopal ordination received Arthur Hinsley by Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val y Zulueta ; Co- consecrators were Vice-gentleman Giuseppe Palica and Peter Emmanuel Amigo , Bishop of Southwark . In 1927 the Pope sent him to British Africa as an Apostolic Visitor , and in 1930 he appointed him Titular Archbishop of Sardis and Apostolic Delegate for the British colonies in Africa .

On April 1, 1935 Arthur Hinsley became Archbishop of Westminster, two years later Pius XI took over. him in the consistory of December 13, 1937 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Susanna in the college of cardinals . Arthur Hinsley attended the 1939 conclave .

He died on March 17, 1943 in Butingford near London and was buried in Westminster Cathedral.
