history
The diocese of Southwark was on September 29, 1850 by Pope Pius IX. from the Archdiocese of Westminster out with the Apostolic Constitution Universalis Ecclesiae - restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England - established as the Diocese of Southwark and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Westminster as a suffragan . On May 19, 1882, the Diocese of Southwark gave parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Portsmouth . Another assignment of territory took place on May 28, 1965 to establish the diocese of Arundel and Brighton .
On May 28, 1965, the Diocese of Southwark was by Pope Paul VI. raised to the archbishopric with the Apostolic Constitution Romanorum Pontificum .
