Peter David Gregory Smith (born October 20, 1943 in London , United Kingdom ; † March 6, 2020 ) was a British clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Southwark (2010-2019). He was previously Bishop of East Anglia (1995-2001) and Archbishop of Cardiff (2001-2010).

Life

Peter David Smith studied law at the University of Exeter and then entered St John's Seminary in Wonersh, studying philosophy and theology. At the Roman Angelicum he completed a doctorate in canon law . He received on 15 July 1972, the sacrament of Holy Orders . After serving as a chaplain, Smith taught law at St John's Seminary in Wonersh. In 1984/85 he was curator at Thornton Heath and from 1985 to 1994 Rector of St John's Seminary in Wonersh.

On March 21, 1995, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of East Anglia . The Archbishop of Westminster , Basil Cardinal Hume OSB , donated him episcopal ordination on May 27 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Archbishop of Southwark, Michael George Bowen , and Bishop Emeritus of East Anglia, Alan Charles Clark . John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Cardiff on October 26, 2001 . On April 30, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Southwark. The inauguration took place on June 10 of the same year in Saint George's Cathedral in Southwark.

In 2010, Smith was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master John Patrick Cardinal Foley and invested in the Papal Lay Order.

Following the resignation of Bishop Kieran Conry , Smith served as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton during the Sedis vacancy from October 4, 2014 to May 28, 2015 .

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on June 10, 2019.
