Michael Charles Evans (born August 10, 1951 in Southwark , London , † July 11, 2011 in Norwich ) was a British Roman Catholic theologian and Bishop of East Anglia .

Life

After attending school Evans studied at St. John Seminary and received on June 22, 1975 his ordination in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark . After a subsequent activity as chaplain of the parish of St. Elizabeth in Richmond , he completed postgraduate studies at Heythrop College of the University of London between 1977 and 1979, completing this with a master's in theology .

He then returned to St John's Seminary in 1979 and was a lecturer in dogmatics . In doing so, he gained wide recognition for his teachings beyond the diocese and was also known for organizing an annual adult program for religious education. Most recently from 1985 to 1987 he was vice-rector of the seminary and thus deputy to Peter Smith , who later became second bishop of East Anglia and archbishop of Southwark. After completing his teaching duties, he became pastor of St. Augustine's Parish in Tunbridge Wells , Kent , in 1987 .

On February 14, 2003 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II to succeed Peter Smith as the third bishop of the Diocese of East Anglia, which includes Suffolk , Cambridgeshire , Peterborough and Norfolk . In March 2003, at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Norwich, Cormac Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor , Archbishop of Westminster , gave him episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Peter Smith, then Archbishop of Cardiff , and the Archbishop of Southwark, Michael George Bowen .

Evans was appointed in 1997 by the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity as one of the eight Catholic members of the International Joint Commission for Dialogue Between the Roman Catholic Church and the World Methodist Council . He spent a week at the Taizé Community every year for 27 years .

Evans passed away after a long battle with prostate cancer , which he was diagnosed with in 2005 .
