from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael de la Bédoyère , actually Michael Anthony Maurice de la Bédoyère (born May 16, 1900 in Saint-Servant , France , † July 13, 1973 in Edenbridge , Kent ) was an English journalist , editor and writer .

Life

Michael de la Bédoyère, born in 1900 as the son of Viscount Yvon de la Bédoyère and Sybil Emily, daughter of the Anglican Bishop of Winchester, Dr. Anthony W. Thorold , came from an English family with French roots; an ancestor was the French general Charles-Angélique de la Bédoyère (1786-1815).

After completing his schooling at Stonyhurst College of the Jesuits in Lancashire , La Bédoyère studied philosophy, politics and economics at the University of Oxford , where he was located in the Campion Hall , the study house of the Jesuits. Since his youth he was convinced of the Catholic faith , so that he had made the decision to also join the Societas Jesu .

During his time at Oxford he gave up this plan and in 1930 accepted a position as a lecturer at the University of Minnesota ( Minneapolis ). In the winter of 1931/32 he returned to Great Britain. During this time he made the acquaintance of the owner of the weekly Catholic Herald , Ernest Vernor Miles (1903-1975). In 1934, La Bédoyère became its editor-in-chief and held this office until 1962.

During these years La Bédoyère married his cousin Catherine Thorold († 1959) and had five children with her. Both La Bédoyère and his wife Catherine were relatives of Bishop Dr. Anthony W. Thorold; about his wife Emily counted u. a. the politician Henry du Pré Labouchère to his relatives. After the death of his wife, La Bédoyère remarried and had two children with his second wife. The historian Guy de la Bédoyère (* 1957) is one of his grandsons.

When he left the Catholic Herald in 1962 , he and his second wife, Charlotte, founded the Search Press and ran it for several years. His successor was his son Martin.

Michael de la Bédoyère lived in Edenbridge, Kent until his death on July 13, 1973.

reception

Under his aegis, the Catholic Herald changed from a provincial newspaper to a critical voice, which often brought the editor-in-chief into conflict with the curia . La Bédoyère also caused discussion with his critical biographies, which emerged over the years.
