The Energie Campus Nürnberg (EnCN) is an interdisciplinary research facility founded in 2011 and based in Nuremberg . The aim of research at the EnCN is to create technologies for a sustainable energy supply based on renewable energies . This includes the combination of the topics of electricity generation from renewable sources, transport of energy, intelligent feed-in , storage , efficient use and the design of the energy market .
The EnCN premises on the former AEG site in the Muggenhof district of Nuremberg were moved into at the beginning of 2013. It was honored as a Selected Location 2012 as part of the Germany - Land of Ideas initiative .

Founding partner

The six founding partners were:

In addition, the Energie Campus Nürnberg e. V. is a sponsoring association to which the city of Nuremberg, the IHK Nuremberg for Middle Franconia and the Chamber of Crafts for Middle Franconia also belong in addition to the scientific partners .

Research priorities

EnCN concept of research along the energy chain

The work on the Energie Campus Nürnberg is divided into several projects.

Renewable energy

The research area of regenerative energy generation deals with the application-related development of new materials for solar thermal energy , photovoltaics and the photochemical conversion of solar energy. Furthermore, processes for printing photovoltaic modules and aging processes are being developed.

Storage technologies

In the energy storage research area , processes and components for storage technologies are developed. Both thermal and electrical storage systems are examined . The focus when storing electrical energy is on storing hydrogen in liquid organic hydrogen carriers . These developments can be tested in a storage technology center.

Electrical networks

In the research area Networks and Infrastructure , new concepts for intelligent power networks are being developed. Both complete systems and components, products and applications are examined, especially for innovative and complex power electronics. High voltage tests, material tests, simulations, demonstrator tests and prototype developments are carried out according to the requirements.

Energy management technologies

New communication networks and system architectures are being developed within the framework of the energy management systems research area. The main focus is on security in data communication and the development of a flexible and cost-effective communication platform with a wide range of uses. In addition, simulation and optimization tools are being developed at different levels with which the efficiency of a complex energy system can be examined and controlled.

Efficient use of energy

In the research area of efficient energy use , new materials for the thermal insulation of buildings as well as new technologies and systems of building technology are developed. The results are simulated and tested and verified on a pilot plant scale. In the industrial sector, new electrical drive concepts are created and existing systems are optimized and further developed.

Energy market design

In the research area energy market design , investment incentives for the creation of power plant and network capacities are examined. By mapping the energy market in models , different alternatives can be compared. A mix of methods is used, which is flanked by experiments and empirical studies.
