Edenbridge is a town and a civil parish in the Sevenoaks District of Kent in south-east England with around 9,000 inhabitants (as of 2011). The name goes back to the old English language: "Eadhelmsbrigge" ("Eadhelm's Bridge" in modern English).
history
The old city center was built along the Roman road London to Lewes Way . The slag that came from the surrounding towns was used to build this road. In the Middle Ages the city became the center of the iron industry . There are many medieval timber houses, one of which is the Eden Valley Museum.
After the railroad was invented, the city continued to expand and the Marlpit Hills, north of the old town center, became part of the city.
Mills
The city has had four mills over the centuries: the Haxted Watermill , the Honor's Mill , both of which are on the Eden River , the Christmas Mill , which is on a tributary of the Eden, and a windmill in the south of the city. All four mills still exist today, but are used in different ways.
Railways
There are two train stations in Edenbridge. The first, which is on the route of the South Eastern Railway (SER) (from Redhill to Tonbridge ), opened on May 26, 1842 . The train station located in the Marlpit Hills is called Edenbridge . To the west of the station, the route intersects the former London, Brighton and Southcoast line (opened January 2, 1888 ). The second train station is here at this intersection. It's called Edenbridge Town .
The town
The 13th century Church of St. Peter & St. Paul contains a set of windows by Edward Burne-Jones on the east side . The bypass, built in the early 21st century to reduce traffic on the old High Street , was called Mont St. Aignan Way because Edenbridge is twinned with the French city of Mont-Saint-Aignan . There are numerous banks and a post office located next to the church.
Bonfire Night
In Edenbridge for some years now, instead of a Fawkes doll, a replica of a person who has currently angered the British public has been ignited on Bonfire Night - in 2017, for example, the film producer Harvey Weinstein in a satirical representation.
