Arthur Roche (born March 6, 1950 in Batley Carr , United Kingdom ) is a Curial Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Arthur Roche attended St. Joseph's Primary School , St. John Fisher High School in Dewsbury, and Christleton High School . In 1969 he was sent to Spain to study at St. Alban's College in Valladolid . Roche studied Catholic theology at the Pontifical University of Comillas from 1969 to 1975 . He then returned to his home diocese and received on July 19, 1975 by the Bishop of Leeds , William Gordon Wheeler , the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Arthur Roche served as an assistant priest at Holy Rood Parish in Barnsley . In 1978 he became private secretary to Bishop William Gordon Wheeler and in 1979 he was also vice chancellor of the Diocese of Leeds and chaplain of the St. John Bosco School . Roche organized Pope John Paul II's visit to York in May 1982 . From 1982 to 1989 Arthur Roche worked at St. Anne's Cathedral in Leeds and from 1986 to 1991 he was Secretary for the Finances of the Diocese of Leeds. In January 1989 Roche was also pastor of St. Wilfrid's Parish in Leeds. In 1991 he was sent to Rome to study Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University . During this time Arthur Roche was living at Venerable English College . Roche holds a degree in Catholic theology. In 1992 he became a spiritual director at the Venerable English College . From April 1996 to April 2002 Arthur Roche was General Secretary of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales . During this time Pope John Paul II made him papal honorary prelate .

On April 12, 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Rusticiana and appointed him auxiliary bishop in Westminster . He was ordained episcopal on May 10, 2001, by the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor , in Westminster Cathedral ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Leeds, David Konstant , and the auxiliary bishop emeritus at Westminster, Victor Guazzelli . While serving as Auxiliary Bishop, Arthur Roche chaired the Archdiocese of Westminster's Pastoral Affairs Committee and Finance Committee and the Catholic Children's Society in Westminster.

On July 16, 2002, Pope John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of Leeds. After Pope John Paul II accepted Bishop David Konstant's resignation on April 7, 2004, Arthur Roche became Bishop of Leeds.

Roche has been chairman of the International Commission for English in the Liturgy since 2002 and chair of the Department of Christian Life and Worship since 2004 . Arthur Roche is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales. He is responsible for the English colleges in Rome and Valladolid.

On June 26, 2012, he was received by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed as the successor to Archbishop Joseph Augustine Di Noia OP as secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments . He was also raised to the rank of archbishop.

On July 29, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Appeal Commission for Serious Criminal Matters, the decision of which is reserved for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
