William Henry Cardinal O'Connell (born December 8, 1859 in Lowell , Massachusetts , USA , † April 22, 1944 in Brighton , Boston ) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Boston .

Life

William Henry O'Connell grew up as the youngest of eleven children in Lowell and initially studied philosophy, physics and chemistry at Boston College . He continued his studies at the Pontifical North American College in Rome continued and received on 8 June 1884, the sacrament of Holy Orders . After the ordination he stayed in Rome for some time and after his return to Massachusetts took on pastoral duties in Medford and in the West End of Boston . In 1895 he returned to Rome as rector of the Pontifical North American College.

On May 14, 1901, Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the Bishop of Portland . He received his episcopal ordination on May 19, 1901 in the Lateran Basilica in Rome by the Prefect of the Study Congregation , Francesco Cardinal Satolli . Co-consecrators were Curia Archbishop Edmund Stonor and the later Cardinal Secretary of State Rafael Merry del Val .

During his tenure in Portland he was also the papal envoy on a diplomatic mission in Japan. The cathedral was told at that time the first changes by frescoes and especially through the large window depicting the Immaculate Conception , the patron saint of the cathedral.

On February 7, 1906 appointed him Pope Pius X to the titular bishop of Constantina and Koadjutorerzbischof the Archdiocese of Boston . With the death of his predecessor John Joseph Williams on August 30, 1907, he took over the leadership of the Archdiocese of Boston as Archbishop. On November 27, 1911, Pius X accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Clemente in the college of cardinals . In 1932, O'Connell was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
