Alessio Cardinal Ascalesi CPPS (born October 22, 1872 in Casalnuovo di Napoli , Province of Naples , Italy , † May 11, 1952 in Naples ) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sant'Agata de 'Goti , Benevento and Naples .

Life

Alessio Ascalesi studied at the Seminary of Spoleto trays Catholic theology and philosophy , entered the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood and received on 8 June 1895, the sacrament of Holy Orders . From 1895 to 1909 he worked as a pastor in Spoleto and Montemurano . He also took on leadership roles at the Bartholomäus College in Montefalco .

On August 8, 1909, he received the episcopal ordination from Domenico Cardinal Serafini OSB and became Bishop of Muro Lucano . From 1911 to 1915 he was Bishop of Sant'Agata de 'Goti and from December 9, 1915 Archbishop of Benevento . In the consistory of December 4, 1916, Alessio Ascalesi was from Pope Benedict XV. accepted into the college of cardinals as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Callisto . He participated in the conclaves in 1922 and 1939 .

On March 7, 1924, Pope Pius XI appointed him . to the Metropolitan of Naples. The Pope called him several times in the 1920s and 1930s to be his legate , including at the Eucharistic Congresses in the Calabria region in 1928 and 1934. In 1944, he became the longest serving cardinal priest .

Cardinal Ascalesi died on May 11, 1952 and found his final resting place in the basilica of the Mother of Good Council in Capodimonte .
