Benedetto Bonazzi OSB (born October 12, 1840 in Marigliano , † April 23, 1915 in Benevento ) was an Italian clergyman, Benedictine abbot , Graecist and since 1902 Archbishop of Benevento .

Life

Bonazzi studied in the Benedictine Abbey of Santissima Trinità di Cava de 'Tirreni . He joined the Benedictine order and made profession in August 1859 . He was ordained a priest on December 19, 1863 .

From 1865 he devoted himself to the study of classical languages, with a particular interest in Greek . In correspondence with Georg Curtius and taking up his etymological and comparative approach, he developed a new didactic of ancient Greek. His main work, the Greek-Italian dictionary ( Dizionario Greco-Italiano ), was published 25 times between 1880 and 1927 and made him famous throughout Europe. In 1872 Bonazzi became a professor at the University of Naplesappointed, but declined in order to continue to devote himself to the schools of the abbey. In 1878 he became rector of the local seminary.
