Gennaro Cardinal Portanova (born October 11, 1845 in Naples , † April 25, 1908 in Reggio Calabria ) was bishop of several dioceses and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

The son of Camillo Portanova and Angela Califano, who received the Sacrament of Confirmation in 1855, attended a Jesuit school . He was ordained a priest on May 22, 1869 by the Archbishop of Naples , Sisto Cardinal Riario Sforza . He was a professor of mathematics, physics and philosophy in a number of Neapolitan institutes. From 1877 to 1883 he was professor of theology at the seminary in Naples.

Pope Pius IX appointed him on August 9, 1883 titular bishop of Rhosus and coadjutor bishop of Ischia with the right of succession. The secretary of the Congregation for the Holy Roman and Universal Inquisition and archpriest of the Lateran Basilica , Raffaele Cardinal Monaco La Valletta , donated him the episcopal ordination on August 12 of the same year in the church Santissimo Redentore a Villa Caserta in Rome, co- consecrators were Camillo Santori , Holy Auditor , and Placido Maria Schiaffino OSBOliv , President of the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy . After the death of Francesco di Nicolas , he succeeded him on February 11, 1885 as Bishop of Ischia.

On March 16, 1888, he was appointed Archbishop of Reggio Calabria . He headed the Bova diocese from 1889 to 1895 as Apostolic Administrator . As diocesan administrator , he headed the diocese of Oppido Mamertina from 1898 to 1899. He was also the protector of the Daughters of the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Reggio Calabria , founded by Brigida Maria Postorino in Catona .

Leo XIII. took him on June 18, 1899 as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals and he received on June 22 of the same year the titular church of San Clemente . He participated in the papal conclave, 1903 , Pope Pius X chose part.

After he died on April 25, 1908 at 6 a.m., his body was laid out in the Cathedral of Reggio Calabria and buried in the municipal cemetery of Reggio Calabrias. Later his remains were transferred to the Cathedral of Reggio Calabria.
