Daniel Joseph Feeney (born September 12, 1894 in Portland , Maine , United States , † September 15, 1969 , ibid) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Portland .

Life

Daniel Joseph Feeney studied at the Grand Séminaire in Montréal after attending Portland High School . He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Portland on May 21, 1921 . He served in the pastoral ministry of various wards in Maine and was later entrusted with the school inspectorate for the Diocese of Portland.

Pope Pius XII appointed him on June 22, 1946 titular bishop of Sita and auxiliary bishop in Portland. The Apostolic Delegate in the United States, Archbishop Amleto Giovanni Cicognani , ordained him episcopal on September 12 of the same year, his 52nd birthday ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Manchester , Matthew Francis Brady , and Louis Francis Kelleher , Auxiliary Bishop of Boston . On March 5, 1952, he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Portland.

With the death of Joseph Edward McCarthys on September 8, 1955, he followed this as Bishop of Portland. During his tenure, the number of religious branches and schools increased. Three social centers, a large number of parish halls and the diocesan administration were created. One of his greatest achievements was the debt relief of the diocese by redeeming previously issued bonds up to 1963, which saved the diocese from impending insolvency.

Feeney participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father. He then initiated the complete redesign of Portland Cathedral, which was almost a hundred years old at the time .

In February 1967 his coadjutor bishop Peter Leo Gerety was appointed apostolic administrator of the diocese after a serious illness had increasingly prevented Feeney from exercising his office. He spent the last months of his life at Portland's Mercy Hospital . Since the cathedral was closed for remodeling at the time of his death, the Requiem took place in his home parish of St. Dominics .
