James Aloysius Hickey
James Aloysius Cardinal Hickey (born October 11, 1920 in Midland , Michigan , USA , † October 24, 2004 in Washington, DC ) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Washington .
Life
James Aloysius Hickey studied in Detroit and Washington the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology and received in June 1946, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then worked for a year as a pastor for the Spanish-speaking immigrants before he was sent to Rome to study for a doctorate , where he earned a doctorate in Canon Law and one in Catholic theology. After returning to the United States, he served as secretary to the Bishop of Saginaw from 1957 to 1966 . He took part in the Second Vatican Council as an expert . Pope Paul VI awarded him the title of Pontifical House Prelate on October 31, 1963.
On April 14, 1967, after being appointed titular bishop of Taraqua and auxiliary bishop in Saginaw, he received episcopal ordination by John Francis Cardinal Dearden . Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Saginaw, Stephen Stanislaus Woznicki , and Auxiliary Bishop Stephen Aloysius Leven of San Antonio . In the following two years he was auxiliary bishop in Saginaw, and from 1969 to 1974 he was the rector of the Pontifical College for North American Students in Rome. From 1974 to 1980 James Aloysius Hickey directed the fortunes of the Diocese of Cleveland as bishop . On June 17, 1980, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Washington .
In addition to his duties in his dioceses, he performed various duties at the Bishops' Conference of the United States . He was a member of the college of cardinals since June 28, 1988 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria Madre del Redentore a Tor Bella Monaca . He was relieved of his duties from the administration of the Archdiocese of Washington in 2000 for reasons of age. Of pneumonia suffering, he died four years later at a hospital in Washington DC Cardinal Hickey was buried at St. Matthew's Cathedral.
