Samuel Stritch
Samuel Alphonse Cardinal Stritch (born August 17, 1887 in Nashville , Tennessee , USA , † May 27, 1958 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Chicago and later a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Samuel Stritch studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Cincinnati and Rome . He received the sacrament of ordination by Curia Cardinal Pietro Respighi in Rome on May 21, 1909, and then worked as a parish chaplain in the Diocese of Nashville . In 1916 and 1917 he was personal secretary to the Bishop of Nashville Thomas Sebastian Byrne , and from 1917 to 1921 Diocesan Chancellor.
In 1921 Pope Benedict XV awarded him . the title of Pontifical House Prelate, and on August 10 of the same year appointed him Bishop of Toledo , Ohio . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Cincinnati , Henry Moeller , on November 30, 1921. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Little Rock , John Baptist Morris , and the Bishop of Brooklyn , Thomas Edmund Molloy .
Pope Pius XI appointed Samuel Alphonse Stritch on August 26, 1930 Archbishop of Milwaukee , Pope Pius XII. transferred to him on December 27, 1939 the direction of the Archdiocese of Chicago and took him on February 18, 1946 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura in the college of cardinals . On March 1, 1958, Pope Pius XII appointed him. as Pro-Prefect of the Congregation de Propaganda Fide . Samuel Alphonse Stritch died on May 26, 1958 as a result of an operation and was buried in the Episcopal Mausoleum of the Archdiocese of Chicago at Mount Carmel Cemetery (Hillside) .
