Terry (obsolete Frotté ) from the French frotter: (off, one) rub, is a textile fabric with special absorbency and a pleasant handle, mainly for home textiles ( towels , washcloths or bathrobes is used). Characteristic are the loops, which result in a larger volume of the material and can therefore absorb a relatively large amount of liquid. The verb frottieren is an 18th century French frotterBorrowed word for "rub (with cloths), rub dry", but its origin is not certain. Hence the word composition terry cloth , a cloth that can be rubbed off or rubbed dry.

Manufacturing

In Frotteeware is tissue with special twisting is prepared which already contain self-loops by different yarn lengths that are twisted together (effect yarn).

In terry cloth is a two-chain tissue composed of the taut backbone as well as the loosely tensioned pile warp (also pile warp) are formed from the through a special device at the loom loops.

qualities

There are four basic qualities:

  • Walk terry is soft and fluffy. It owes its fullness to loose loops made of soft yarn. Its advantage is its high absorbency.
  • Twisted terry is firmly under control. It has a high massage effect thanks to the twisted loop threads.
  • Velor terry has a soft surface because the loops are cut open.
  • Knitted terry is relatively new. It is not woven, but knitted and combines good absorbency, light massage effect, loop strength and softness.

Terry towels are divided into three weight classes, depending on the type of thread, thread length and weaving technique: light (350–499 g / m²), medium (500–599 g / m²) and heavy (over 600 g / m²).
