Linen bathrobe

A bathrobe , dressing gown or robe is a one-piece garment, which usually fluffy material, often terry-like fabric or silk, to receive the residual moisture after bathing or showering. Bathrobes are used in private homes as well as in public swimming pools and saunas .

The bathrobe is typically button - and lockless and is only held together by a tie belt.

Occasionally the coat has a permanently attached hood ("hooded bathrobe"). There are models for women as well as for men and children. Many bathrobes are more or less long and cover the knees or lower legs, but there are short bathrobes for women, and more rarely for men, that end at thigh height or above the knees. In good hotels own bathrobes are provided; According to the hotels, they are preferred "take-away items" for guests.

Usual sources of supply are textile shops, department stores and mail order companies.

History

Bathrobes in a swimming pool around 1916

In 1906, Alfred Martin wrote the book German Bathing Body in Past Days: along with an article on the history of German hydropathy . In this book he quotes from the medieval epic Ruodlieb (around 1030) verses XIII, 6–9: Here the hero lies down in a bathrobe on the bed "until he was dry and the heat in him subsided".

The Glotterthal bathing regulations in the middle of the 16th century stipulated that men had to enter the water covered. It is known from 1880 that women wore a type of bathrobe on the beach on their way to the sea. This acted primarily as a privacy screen. At that time it was made of beaver, flannel or terry-like fabric. This type of bathrobe has also been adopted by men since the beginning of the 20th century. However, the cut was similar to the dressing gown.

The bathrobe in literature and pop culture

In the novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy , one of the actors, Arthur Dent, only wears a bathrobe all the time. Playboy inventor Hugh Hefner was another staunch house / bathrobe wearer.

The bathrobe is also given a central role in the television program Dittsche - Das Real Leben . In the movie The Big Lebowski , the protagonist played by Jeff Bridges and called dude also wears a bathrobe. In the film The Secret Window , Johnny Depp's preferred item of clothing is a bathrobe. The musician Udo Jürgens traditionally gave his encores in a white bathrobe. In addition, the fictional character Sherlock Holmes wears a red and gold bathrobe in all stories. The Bavarian cabaret artist Luise Kinseher appears in her solo programs as her alter ego Famous Mary from Bavary in a colorful dressing gown.
