A seat sling is a long sling of tape that is used as a makeshift replacement for a climbing harness .

How the seat sling works

The noose is placed around the body from back to front. One part of the sling is above the buttocks around the hips, the other below the buttocks around the legs. The lower part is also led forward between the legs and through the upper bays and connected with a carabiner . If the sling is very short, the lower bay can be connected directly to the upper bay.

You sit in the seat sling that is hung from the carabiner, for example to work or to abseil in the mountains. Before the spread of the half-mast cast , the carabiner seat was used when abseiling . When sailing, such a sling can serve as a replacement for the seaman's chair.

In an emergency, the noose can also be tied from a cord with a sack stitch or spar stitch . However, the cord cuts a lot, so the use of a strong rope is advisable. With the preferred use of ribbon material, the seat loop is made with a ribbon loop knot . In the past, spliced endless slings were used.

In an emergency, a second sling can also serve as a chest strap. This achieves a better vertical position.
