The ribbon loop knot is a knot for connecting ribbon material to form the ribbon loop . The English writer Izaak Walton (1593–1683) called the knot a water knot . In 1815 Hutton's Dictionary identified the knot as a ring knot .

The ribbon loop knot is used to tie loops from ribbon material. It can also connect two ribbons together.

Due to safety risks, climbers do not use this knot. As early as 1994, Pit Schubert described the danger when the loop knot gets caught on a ledge or branch. If the knot is loaded and the rock spur rests against a certain loop of the knot, the knot can loosen and lead to a fall. Although such a coincidence of unfortunate coincidences seems extremely unlikely, several accidents - including fatal ones - have become known. From this, Schubert concluded the recommendation to use sewn tape loops or to sew the ends of the tape. If this is not possible, you should at least place the knot in such a way that it is impossible to get caught on the rock. Today, many experts advise against the use of the sling knot completely, it is even referred to as the "death knot". Sewn slings are almost exclusively used in climbing.

Knot

First a loose overhand knot is tied into one end of the band material . Then you follow the overhand knot parallel with the other end. It is important to ensure that the surfaces of the strip material lie exactly on top of one another, i.e. are not twisted. See also the sack stitch as a rope connection.

The length of the free ends should be at least three times the bandwidth.

Alternatives

A sewn and tested sling is preferable to a self-knotted one.
