List of nodes
The list of knots contains the most important and common knots in knot science .
Systematics
The attempt to compile a complete and unambiguous list of the nodes runs into difficulties: the nodes were not systematically defined by a central point, but have grown historically over centuries and in very different regions, and some were probably invented several times independently of one another. They are also used in very different environments (boatmen, hunters, fishermen, climbers, etc.), each of which has developed its own terminology, but between which there is often no contact. This means that the same node can have a completely different name depending on the environment. Conversely, the same name can designate a completely different node depending on the environment.
The spar stitch can be cited as an illustrative example : In nautical science, the "spar stitch" describes a loop used to attach objects to a rope. In the fire service, however, "spar stitch" refers to a knot that connects two ropes. The fire brigade variant is called "fishing knot" by anglers. Austrian cave explorers, on the other hand, speak of a “cave knot” when they attach a carabiner to the rope using a (nautical) “double spar stitch”. Based on the fire department variant, they also call this knot "half double spar stitch". See also node names .
The knot standard work Ashley's book of knots by Clifford Ashley is not free from such inconsistencies. Ashley comments on this in the preface.
This list and the nomenclature used in it does not claim to be historically correct. But it uses a uniform system that is continued in all node articles. This means that the nodes in the description and images in Wikipedia can be clearly identified throughout. Alternative names and their history are listed in the Node Articles in the "Names and History" chapter.
Depending on the application, different knots are particularly suitable. Seafarers, climbers, rescue workers and anglers use tried and tested knots for their purposes (columns “Type” and “Use”) and also give them their own names. The nodes are arranged alphabetically in the sortable table. Identical nodes ("Base node" column) with different names are listed several times, the most important designation is always highlighted in bold. Many nodes are described in detail in their own articles. Knot, stitch and stek mean the same thing; They are only listed once for the different knot names in this regard (example Schotstek: not as a Schotenstich or Schotknoten, but as a weaver's knot). The knots listed in the Ashley Book of Knots are numbered accordingly.
Node types
A distinction is made between the following types of nodes:
Art | description |
---|---|
Base | Basis for many knots |
Federation | Connection of beams |
Mooring lines | Attaching a rope to an object |
Clamping knot | Knot tied around another rope that clamps the other rope and blocks it itself |
Noise knot | Knot that dissolves under tension; Tying mistakes or joke knots |
loop | Fixed eye |
loop | Closing eye |
Rope tensioner | Knot combination for tensioning ropes |
Rope shortener | Knot for shortening (or rolling up) ropes in the middle |
Fuse | Securing people when climbing, abseiling, etc. |
stopper | Thicken or weigh down ropes, mostly end knots, alternative for whipping |
Whipping | Prevents the loosening of the cardeles and strands of a rope |
connection | Connect two ropes together |
The assignment of the node names to the most important user groups takes place in the rear columns (the same nodes are referred to differently by different users):
