The Kalmuck knot (Russian калмыцкий узел) is used to tie a tight loop . Although it is still largely unknown in the West, it is often used in Russia instead of the bowline . The Kalmuck knot is used by Kalmuck and Evenk reindeer herders to tie the animals, as well as in Russian seafaring. He was also known in the GDR merchant navy.
The knot is not listed in the Ashley book of knots , but it is mentioned in the standard Russian work on seafarers' knots , Морские узлы by Lev Skrjagin (1930-2000).

With the loop on the slip, the knot can be loosened in a flash by pulling on the loose end.
Alternatives
Without slip , the knot is also called a Cossack knot .
