application

Cowboy & Lasso

The lasso knot is used by cowboys to lasso cattle and horses. It is used to create a fixed eye (= loop ) at one end of the rope. The rope, usually made of rawhide , is put through this loop to form the lasso loop . It is crucial that the loop is as round as possible so that the rope slides through easily and the loop can easily be pulled. The diameter of the loop is the size of a ring made of an index finger and thumb. The noose has a diameter of about 1.5 m when it is thrown.

Knot

First, a small eye is placed. Then you move the loose end into the eye like this: if the fixed end is at the bottom, you move the loose end from above into the small eye (if the standing end is above, you move the loose end from below into the small one Eye). This creates the actual eye of the knot. Then you drive around the loose end (i.e. the one that forms the actual loop) and back through the little eye so that the two ends come out parallel from the little eye and can be tightened together.

The similar looking bowline

The lasso knot must not be confused with the bowline . Although it looks similar to this one, it is a different knot and is also tied differently.
