b) carpenter's knot

application

The knot tightens under load and holds the load due to the rope friction that now acts . The knot only holds the tension, it loosens when the load is put down. Due to the large angle between the supporting rope and the twisted loop, the tensile strength of the rope (including the knot strength ) is significantly reduced.

The safety and stability of particularly long objects is guaranteed by half a stroke . This is attached a little away from the knot in the direction of pull.

Rope bridge

When building rope bridges , it used to be used to attach the suspension rope to the tree. Today the carrying rope is wrapped several times around the tree and then secured because of its better tear resistance .

Building trade

Carpenter's knot (below in the picture) for securing long beams

On the building site and by carpenters, beams are fastened at the bottom with the carpenter's knot and secured at the top with half a knot (noseband). So they can be pulled up vertically with a rope.

Musical instruments

Carpenter's knot on a guitar (as a guitar knot)

In the classical guitar, the carpenter's strike (better known as a guitar knot) is used to secure the strings on the tailpiece.

fire Department

In the fire department , for example, it is attached to the suction strainer of the suction line and called a carpenter's blow or carpenter's stitch.

Archery

In traditional archery , the one-sided Flemish splice bowstring is often attached to the end of the bow with the so-called bowmaker's knot. This is a carpenter's knot.

Knot

The rope is looped around the tree or the workpiece. The loose end of the rope is looped around the fixed end and then looped around itself several times.

Alternatives

  • To attach the suspension rope of a rope bridge to the tree, the rope is better wrapped around the tree several times and then secured.
  • In shipping, the mooring line is attached to the post with the loom line , usually secured with two half-turns .
