Squared timber
As Squares ( Eckhölzer ) is called Wood the by sawing with four in right angle is provided to each other surfaces in the fiber direction. The cross-sectional area is at right angles to these areas and is called end grain or end grain .
Designations
As sawn timber according to DIN 68252, squared timbers have a minimum dimension of 6 cm, as structural lumber (DIN 4074) 4 cm, and each correspond to a maximum thickness-width ratio of 1: 3. This distinguishes them from the longer cross-sections ( boards or planks ) and smaller ones (such as laths ).
If one side of the cross-section is wider than 20 cm, the timber (in common usage) is called a beam according to the standard . For this and the designations of whole, half, crossed wood and frame, see types of cut .
