Video tutorial on how to tie an eight knot

The figure-eight knot serves as a thickening of one end of the rope, for example to prevent it from passing through an eyelet , a block or a rope or trap stopper . When sailing is at the end of pods and traps always a figure eight knot tied. If a sheet under load rushes out of control , this represents a considerable danger for the crew and the ship becomes difficult to steer because of the flapping sail. Noisy traps can hardly be repaired at sea, as the line runs up inside the mast on most ships.

The eight knot can be easily loosened again even after heavy loads. It is part of the examination material for sailing and sport boat driving licenses .
