Hermann Herbst

Hermann Herbst (born July 21, 1895 in Düsseldorf , † August 17, 1944 in Niš , Yugoslavia ) was a German historian , codicologist and librarian . Herbst was one of the leading binding researchers of his time.

Life

After Herbst had attended high school in Magdeburg , he took part in the First World War as a lieutenant . After the end of the war, he studied German and Romance languages in Halle an der Saale and at the University of Leipzig (including with Walter Goetz ), where he received his doctorate in 1922 with heresies in southwest Germany in the first half of the 13th century . He then trained as a librarian until 1924 and in 1925 became a research assistant at the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel . In 1927, Herbst was appointed library councilor and deputy director. When the Second World War broke out , he was drafted as a captain and finally took part as battalion leader in the fighting in Eastern and Southeastern Europe, where he fell on August 17, 1944.

In his academic work, Herbst concentrated on the cultural history of the 15th and 16th centuries, B. on the Bursfeld reform as well as on north German medieval library , book and binding history .
