The Monastery of Santa Maria di Acquaformosa is (also known under the name of Santa Maria di San Leucio) is a former Cistercian abbey in the region of Calabria , Italy . It was near the town of Acquaformosa in the province of Cosenza , about 74 km northwest of Cosenza , at an altitude of 756 m, on the southern edge of today's Pollino National Park .
history
The abbey was founded in 1195 or 1197 by a convent sent from the Sambucina monastery under the abbot Luca Campano, who became archbishop of Cosenza in 1203, on land given to the church in 1140 by the lords of Altomonte . The abbey thus belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . She soon attained considerable wealth and reputation, u. a. donated by the emperor Friedrich II. At 1,430 m above sea level, the monastery owned the Grangie Madonna del Monte. After the Turkish conquest of Albania , many Albanian refugees settled around the monastery. Acquaformosa also fell into the coming period , which led to a decrease in the number of its monks. In 1633, however, the abbey entered the Calabrian-Lucan Cistercian Congregation, and the Cistercians remained until the abolition of the monastery under Joseph Bonaparte in 1807. Two monks are then said to retreat to Madonna del Monte and lived there until the middle of the 19th century to have.
Plant and buildings
Only remains of the complex in later buildings have been preserved. Some items of equipment have entered the parish church.
