Wilson Lewis, 56, an upper middle class inheritance attorney in New Bern , North Carolina , did something wrong. He is very busy with his work at a law firm and has little time for family and especially not for his wife. She only wants a little romance, just like her parents Noah and Allie. When Wilson finally forgets her 29th wedding anniversary, he brings the barrel to overflow. His 53-year-old wife Jane is deeply affected, but does not show it. Wilson, contrite, blames himself for the sin of omission and starts investigating the cause. How could that happen? Answer: In the nearly three decades of living with Jane, the legal practice always came before the family.

Wilson tries to make amends. Allies are the 27-year-old daughter Anna and her partner Keith. The three pretend Jane and Anna and Keith want to get married on the upcoming 30th wedding anniversary of Wilson and Jane. Jane, who had always wanted such a wedding for herself, throws herself into her daughter's wedding preparations with full enthusiasm. The surprise succeeds. The 30th wedding anniversary is celebrated like it was 30 years ago, only much more elaborate and much more meticulous. Jane, deeply moved, can finally forgive Wilson.

Serialized novel

In the novel, the story of Jane's parents, Noah Calhoun and wife Allie from Like a Single Day , is continued by the first-person narrator Wilson. Allie died of Alzheimer's and Noah, now 87 years old, lives in a retirement home. The old man defends himself against the exaggerated care of his four children and prefers to stick to his son-in-law Wilson, who understands the quirks. One is Noah's love of poetry. He knows his Walt Whitman - the blades of grass - by heart. Thus, at the end of the novel, he gives away the torn volume of poetry to Wilson and Jane. The other quirk has to do with Allie's death. Noah cannot get over it and clings to the idea that the spirit of the beloved deceased appears to him as it were in the physical shell of a very specific swan - Noah says "swan" - who swims up to feed every day.
