description

The spherical to ovoid individually growing Pediocactus bradyi subsp. winkleri becomes 3.5 to 7 cm long and 2.5 to 5.5 cm wide. The branched beet root, which is also common in the subspecies Pediocactus bradyi subsp. bradyi and Pediocactus bradyi subsp. despainii is present. The yellow, pink, bell-shaped flowers are 1.5 to 2.2 cm long and 1.5 to 3 cm wide. One to three flowers appear irregularly around the apex. Characteristic is the extreme covering of the areoles which occurs in the subspecies Pediocactus bradyi subsp. bradyi and Pediocactus bradyi subsp. despainii is absent.

Geophytic characteristics as well as with the other representatives of the section Rhytidospermae , Pediocactus bradyi and the representatives of the Pediocactus Pediocactus paradinei and Pediocactus knowltonii become clear.

It is hardy to minus 20 ° C when dry . Real-root cultivation is possible in Europe.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Distribution map of the section Rhytidospermae .

Pediocactus bradyi subsp. winkleri grows endemically in the Navajoan Desert of Utah in alkaline soils enriched with mussel residues on flat hills at altitudes of 1,450 to 1,650 meters. It is associated there with Sclerocactus wrightiae , Sclerocactus parviflorus , Echinocereus triglochidiatus , Opuntia polyacantha and Yucca species.

The description as Pediocactus bradyi subsp. winkleri took place in 1995 by Fritz Hochstätter. According to Fritz Hochstätter, the correct name is Pediocactus bradyi subsp. winklerorum , as the first description mentions the wife and son and therefore the plural must be chosen for the species name.

Synonyms are:

  • Pediocactus winkleri K.D. Heil 1979
  • Pediocactus bradyi var. Winklerorum Hochstätter 1979
  • Pediocactus simpsonii subsp. winklerorum Halda 2000
  • Puebloa bradyi var. Winklerorum Doweld 1999
