Yucca harrimaniae subsp. neomexicana (English common name "New Mexico Yucca") is a subspecies of the plant species Yucca harrimaniae in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca harrimaniae subsp. neomexicana grows solitary, stemless to group-forming (rarely with stems up to 50 cm in height). The root system is like the subspecies Yucca harrimaniae subsp. sterile rhizome-like . The stiff, green leaves are 10 to 30 cm long and 2 cm wide. This subspecies has the narrowest leaves of the Yucca harrimaniae subspecies. The leaf margins form fine fibers.

The inflorescence that begins in the leaves protrudes above the leaves and is 0.4 to 1.4 meters high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, spherical, hermaphrodite flowers are 2 to 4 cm long and 2 to 3 cm in diameter. Of the six white to cream-colored bracts of the same shape , the outer ones are sometimes covered in purple. The flowering period extends from May to July.

distribution

Yucca harrimaniae subsp. neomexicana is common in the US states of New Mexico , Colorado, and Oklahoma on plains, on flat rocky hills, and in grasslands at altitudes between 1,300 and 1,400 meters. This species grows together with Echinocereusreichenbachii , Echinocereus viridiflorus and Opuntia species.

Yucca harrimaniae subsp. neomexicana is frost hardy to –20 ° C in Central Europe . It is rare in collections. In Germany, Mannheim, in the collection of F. Hochstätter, twelve-year-old specimens grow unprotected in the open air.

Systematics

The botanical name was chosen after one of the occurrences in the state of New Mexico. The valid description by Fritz Hochstätter under the name Yucca harrimaniae subsp. neomexicana was published in 1998.

Synonyms are Yucca neomexicana Wooton & Standl. (1913) and Yucca harrimaniae var. Neomexicana Reaval (1977).
