Paul Carpenter Standley
Paul Carpenter Standley (born March 21, 1884 in Avalon (Missouri) , † June 2, 1963 in Tegucigalpa ) was an American botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Standl. "
Life
He attended Drury University in Springfield, Massachusetts and New Mexico State University (NMSU). He obtained a bachelor's degree from the former in 1907 and a master’s degree from NMSU a year later. At the NMSU he worked as a research assistant until 1909. From there he went to the Smithsonian , where he worked until 1928. In the spring of 1928 he was appointed to the Field Museum of Natural History , where he worked and researched until 1950.
After retiring in 1950, he went to the Escuela Agricola Panamericana , a private university in Honduras , where he worked in the herbarium and library there until 1956 , as well as doing field studies , before moving to Tegucigalpa, where he moved to June 2, 1963 passed away.
One of his main areas of research included the acanthus family . Together with Louis Otho Williams and Julian Alfred Steyermark , he wrote the work Flora of Guatemala (from 1946).
Taxa named after Standley
Three plant species were named after Standley: Standleya Brade from the family of the redness plants (Rubiaceae), Standleyacanthus Leonard from the family of Acanthus (Acanthaceae) and Standleyanthus R.M.King & H.Rob. from the sunflower family (Asteraceae); his name also appears in numerous species names. The plant genus Stanmarkia Almeda from the black- mouthed family (Melastomataceae) honors Paul Carpenter Standley and Julian Alfred Steyermark .
