Julian Alfred Steyermark

Julian Alfred Steyermark (born January 27, 1909 in St. Louis , Missouri , † October 15, 1988 ibid) was an American botanist . His focus was the new worldly flora, his specialty was the family of the red plants (Rubiaceae). Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Steyerm. "

Live and act

Julian Alfred Steyermark was the only child of the businessman Leo L. Steyermark and Mamie I. Steyermark (nee Isaacs). Steyermark studied at the Henry Shaw School of Botany at the University of Washington, where he received his Ph.D. completed.

Steyermark's main works are the Flora of Venezuelan Guyana , the Flora of Missouri and the Flora of Guatemala . In the course of his life he collected over 130,000 plants in twenty-six countries, which earned him an entry in the Guinness Book of Records . He himself wrote the first description of 2,392 taxa , including one family , 38 genera and 1864 species .

Steyermark was curator at the Missouri Botanical Garden .

The plant genera Steyermarkia Standl. from the family of the redness plants (Rubiaceae), Steyermarkina R.M.King & H.Rob. from the sunflower family (Asteraceae), Steyermarkochloa Davidse & RPEllis from the sweet grass family (Poaceae), Jasarum G.S.Bunting from the arum family (Araceae) and Steyerbromelia L.B.Sm. from the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae) to the moss genus Steyermarkiella H.Rob. have been named after him. The plant genus Aristeyera H.E.Moore from the palm family (Arecaceae) honors Steyermark and Leandro S. Aristeguieta; the genus Stanmarkia Almeda from the black- mouthed family (Melastomataceae) honors Steyermark and Paul Carpenter Standley .
