Guy Ryder CBE (born January 3, 1956 in Liverpool ) is a British political scientist , trade unionist and Director General of the International Labor Organization (ILO) since 2012 .

education

Ryder studied social and political science at the University of Cambridge and then Latin American studies at the University of Liverpool . In addition to English, he speaks fluent French and Spanish.

Career

In 1981 Ryder became assistant to the international department of the British trade union confederation Trades Union Congress in London .

From 1985 he was Secretary of the Industry and Trade Department of the International Federation of Commercial, Clerical, Professional and Technical Employees (FIET) in Geneva .

In 1988 he became deputy director in the Geneva office of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), and in 1993 he was appointed director.

In 1998 Ryder joined the International Labor Organization (ILO) as Director of the Office for Employee Programs, and in 1999 he became Director of the Secretary General's Office. During this time the Decent Work Agenda of the ILO was published, which was supported by many international organizations.

In 2002 Ryder was appointed Secretary General of the ICFTU, which is headquartered in Brussels . He initiated a process of global unification of the international democratic trade union movements. He was one of the leading personalities of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (German Global Call to Combat Poverty ) (GCAP), as its spokesman he appeared at the World Summit 2005. In 2006 the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) was founded, Guy Ryder became the first General Secretary and led the delegations in talks with the United Nations , the International Monetary Fund , the World Bank , the World Trade Organization and at the G20 summits.

In September 2010 Ryder returned to the ILO in Geneva as Executive Director, where he assumed responsibility for international labor standards and fundamental labor rights. Among other tasks, he monitored compliance with ILO agreements and recommendations and led ILO projects on labor standards in various countries, including Bahrain , Colombia , Fiji , Georgia , Greece , Myanmar and Swaziland .

In May 2012, Guy Ryder was elected ILO Director General. When he took office on October 1, 2012, he announced that the organization would translate its principles into decisive action and do everything possible to improve the working lives of people on all continents. To ensure this, extensive reform processes would be initiated in the organization.

On November 7, 2016, Ryder was re-elected by an overwhelming majority for a second term beginning in 2017.

Awards

Ryder was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2009 .

Guy Ryder is a member of the steering committee of International Gender Champions , an organization that has made gender equality its business in international organizations.
