Echinocereusreichenbachii is a species of the genus Echinocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet reichbachii honors the German engineer and cactus collector Friedrich Reichenbach from Dresden. English common names are "Black Lace Cactus", "Lace Cactus", "Merry Widow Cactus" and "Purple Candle Cactus".

Echinocereusreichenbachii grows solitary or branched with 12 or more shoots . The spherical to cylindrical shoots tapering towards the tip grow upright, are light to dark green and covered by thorns . They reach heights of up to 40 centimeters with diameters of up to 10 centimeters. The 10 to 19 narrow ribs have low humps. The up to 7 narrow central spines are differently colored and 1 to 20 millimeters long. The 12 to 36 radial spines arranged in a comb shape are 3 to 25 millimeters long.

The funnel-shaped, fragrant, pink to magenta flowers appear near the shoot tips. They have a darker or white throat, are 5 to 12 inches long and can reach a diameter of up to 12 inches. The spherical to egg-shaped, green fruits contain a white pulp and tear open lengthways.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereusreichenbachii is common in the southwestern United States and northeastern Mexico .

The first description as Echinocactusreichenbachii was in 1843 by Wilhelm Gerhard Walpers . Friedrich Ferdinand Haage placed the species in the genus Echinocereus in 1883 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
